Case study: Uptime detects two AOV impacting Searchspring bugs

The average Shopify online store uses anywhere from 6 to 16+ different third-party Shopify apps at any given time. These apps are critical to powering the online store, and provide important functionality beyond what Shopify as a platform can provide out of the box.

But having a lot of third-party apps powering critical parts of the store can create opportunities for things to break – as you are now reliant on all these external parties. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on these apps and monitor their functionality to ensure they’re working as expected!

Through Uptime’s Shopify automated testing – instead of finding out hours/days too late – Nili Lotan was notified immediately about two AOV-impacting bugs related to their Searchspring product page upsells.

Issue #1: product page upsells disappearing

The first issue became immediately apparent after an automated UI test which checked the ability to quick add upsell products on the product page began failing.

Using Uptime's screenshot comparison tool, we were quickly able to assess the issue, as it was obvious the Selected for you upsells that normally appear below the fold on product pages were no longer appearing.

Armed with this information, Nili Lotan quickly reached out to their contacts at Searchspring, and the issue was resolved within 30 minutes. Once the upsells began reappearing again, the team at Nili Lotan received an email from Uptime letting them know the issue had been resolved and the automated UI test recovered.

Without Uptime it could have been days or months before the team realized these upsells were missing, causing a drastic reduction in AOV.

Issue #2: recommending sold out variants

The second issue was one we’ve seen all too many times before, where out-of-stock variants were being recommended as upsells.

Recommending out-of-stock variants can cause a poor user experience, as a customer will commit to adding something to cart, only to be met with an alert that the product they wanted is actually sold out.

In this case, Nili Lotan was alerted that their same product page upsells automated UI test was failing, however this time, it was because when our Uptime bot was trying to add the upsell to the cart, it was being met with this out-of-stock message:

The team realized that this was not the expected behavior, and again worked with their partner at Searchspring to ensure only in-stock variants appeared as upsells across the online store – ensuring a smooth user experience and boosting AOV.

Uptime gives our leadership team the peace of mind needed to ensure the website customer journey is uninterrupted. The Slack notifications of app/Shopify outages are also very convenient!
